Women’s Fund Fiji Workshop Ignites Climate Justice and Gender Solutions

Nasau Resort, Nadi – October 18, 2023 – Today marks the commencement of the Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF) 2023 Annual Reflection Workshop at Nasau Resort. The workshop, led by the newly appointed Executive Director, Ms. Reijeli-Cokanasiga Taylor, promises to be a pivotal event in the pursuit of climate justice and gender solutions.

Executive Director, Ms. Reijeli-Cokanasiga Taylor

In her opening address, Ms. Taylor expressed her gratitude to distinguished representatives of grantee partners, Generation Equality change-makers, invited guest speakers, panellists, and colleagues for their presence at this significant workshop. This marks the first time the Annual Reflection Workshop convenes in Nadi, fulfilling a resolution from the 2021 workshop to take discussions to locations where grantees and projects exist, fostering collaborative learning and on-site experiences.

Ms. Taylor, who assumed the role of Executive Director just three weeks ago, shared insights into her background, upbringing, and professional journey as an urban and regional planner with a rich history in public service. Her commitment to community work and empowering women was ignited by her mother’s involvement in the field.

The workshop’s theme, “Climate Justice, Gender Solutions,” aligns with global priorities and emphasises the crucial role of women in addressing climate change and gender inequality. Ms. Taylor highlighted the interconnected challenges of climate change and gender inequality, stressing the need for the full contribution of women and girls to achieve global goals, including the 1.5 degrees Celsius target.

She underscored the workshop’s focus on solutions rather than dwelling on the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women. Ms. Taylor spotlighted instances where women offer solutions, from driving innovation in agriculture to leading sustainable energy efforts, and emphasised the need for collaboration to address climate challenges.

Acknowledging the workshop’s importance in the Pacific context, Ms. Cokanasiga called for concrete action to close gaps in women’s access to resources crucial for island states’ future, particularly in rural and remote communities. She highlighted the role of the private sector in creating just transitions and innovative solutions, emphasising the importance of measuring the impact of climate change on women and recognising their contributions.

The Executive Director also urged increased representation of women in leadership positions, the use of technology and smart solutions for efficiency, and support for young women leading climate movements. The workshop aims to be a milestone in climate action, promoting collaborative efforts to leverage the full potential of women and girls.

As the workshop unfolds over the next two days, participants will engage in discussions, share ideas, and work towards practical solutions that contribute to climate justice and gender solutions.

Ms. Cokanasiga concluded her address by declaring the workshop officially open, wishing participants fruitful deliberations, and expressing hope that the event would inspire and enrich all involved.
