Shrinking spaces for rural women a concern for PCP

The easing of COVID-19 related restrictions by the Fijian Government in October 2021 was a move welcomed by the Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding (PCP) who believe that the six months of restrictions had taken its toll on Fijians, especially on rural women. “Women’s spaces shrunk dramatically between April – October this year. Women were largely confined to their homes with extended care duties and no safe place to discuss some of the challenges they were facing.”

A surge in late-stage detection of cancer patients could be expected – Fiji Cancer Society

The Fiji Cancer Society (the Society) believes that there could be a surge in late-stage detection and presentation of cases now that COVID-restrictions have lifted. According to the Society Chief Executive Officer Belinda Chan, this is a concern as annually around 1,600 Fijians are diagnosed with cancer and many are already in the late-stage of their illness and can only be offered palliative care support.  Reproductive cancers are among the top five causes of death in women around Fiji.

Women’s grant ignites entrepreneurial journey for women’s group in Kadavu

Nestled in the hills of Tavuki District on the Island of Kadavu, is Waisomo village, home to Naibati Women’s Club (also known as Waisomo’s Women’s Group). The club was formed in January 2000 to create economic opportunities for its 20 members. Under the guidance and support of their village development committee advisor, in 2020, the club secured a grant of FJD 17,000 from Women’s Fund Fiji.
