From Hive to Harvest

For Josephine McComber, beekeeping was once an unfamiliar world—one she never imagined would become a source of livelihood and empowerment. But today, she stands proudly over her buzzing hives, carefully bottling golden honey, a testament to her hard work and the transformative power of knowledge.
Josephine was one of the women who took part in the beekeeping training facilitated by 2024 National Woman Farmer of the Year Atrul Nisha, with support from Women’s Fund Fiji through the Women’s Economic Empowerment Project. The two-day training covered everything from the basics of beekeeping to hands-on hive splitting and harvesting techniques. Equipped with new skills, protective suits, and essential tools, Josephine was ready to take on the challenge.

With determination, she nurtured her hive, tending to the bees with patience and care. Over time, her colony thrived, and soon, she was able to harvest her first batch of honey. What started as a learning experience quickly turned into an opportunity—an opportunity to provide for her family.
Now, Josephine bottles and sells her own honey, using the income to support her household. What was once just a box of bees is now a sustainable business, bringing financial independence and security.
“I am so thankful for this training and the support from Women’s Fund Fiji,” Josephine shares. “It has not only given me a skill but a way to earn and contribute to my family’s needs.”
She is not alone in this journey. Alongside her, six other women have also received double-box hives, suits, and equipment to start their beekeeping ventures. The Women’s Economic Empowerment Project is helping women in the community step into entrepreneurship, proving that financial independence is within reach.
