Cakaudrove Celebrates 16 Days of Activism with Powerful Call to Action
November 29, 2024
Savusavu, Fiji – “If you are punching your wives, please stop it. If you know someone is causing harm, mentally abusing, or committing acts of violence, speak up or report it.”
These were the resounding words of Akanisi Tarabe, who addressed the people of Cakaudrove Province today during the Cakaudrove Day Celebration, commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Speaking on behalf of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Tikina Cakaudrove (SVTC), Tarabe urged community members to break the silence surrounding violence and take collective responsibility for ending abuse.
“Gone are the days where we stayed silent to avoid embarrassment or considered it a private matter,” she declared, calling on elders and leaders to stand in solidarity with SVTC to protect women and girls.
The day’s events, initiated by the SVTC, began with a powerful march led by women of the province, joined by men, to demonstrate their commitment to ending violence. The march was followed by speeches and awareness-raising activities, uniting the community in the fight against gender-based violence.
This celebration was supported by Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF), under the thematic area of Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. Through the project, “Improving Gender Relations in Targeted iTaukei Villages in the Province of Cakaudrove,” SVTC is working in six communities to promote awareness and foster healthier relationships.
Assistant Roko Tui Cakaudrove, Anare Drauna, commended SVTC’s grassroots efforts, stating, “While our office operates at a higher level, SVTC’s work directly reaches households and communities. This partnership is a valuable step in raising awareness and addressing violence.”
The event also featured vibrant entertainment by the Police Band, creating a festive atmosphere as the community celebrated its commitment to ending violence against women and girls.
