Finding Strength After Silence
March 4, 2026
For years, Lakshmi Vikashni Goundar carried her pain quietly. Married at a young age, her early life was overshadowed by emotional abuse that slowly eroded her confidence and left her feeling powerless. When her husband passed away, Lakshmi hoped that a new relationship would bring companionship and understanding. Instead, she found herself trapped once again, this time enduring repeated physical abuse.

With courage and determination, Lakshmi sought help from the Women’s Crisis Centre. While taking this brave step marked the beginning of her healing, the trauma she had endured led to depression and a deep loss of self-belief. At her lowest point, life felt uncertain and overwhelming.
Today, however, Lakshmi stands in a very different place.
Surrounded by her four children, she speaks of peace, purpose, and renewal. She describes her current chapter as one shaped by healthier relationships, resilience, and a completely transformed understanding of herself.
A turning point in Lakshmi’s life came in 2023 when she enrolled in the six-week Confident Woman program at the Almanah Hope Centre. Graduating in September of that year, she recalls the experience with gratitude and pride.
“I have learnt so many things from this program,” Lakshmi shared, smiling as she reflected on her journey. One of the most powerful aspects of the program, she explained, was the opportunity to explore her personal roots and life experiences, helping her better understand who she truly is.
Through guided sessions and practical learning, Lakshmi moved from a place of deep self-doubt to recognizing the importance of self-care and personal growth. She learned that prioritizing her own well-being was not selfish, but essential to overall health and a fulfilling life.
The program also equipped her with vital life skills. She gained tools to manage change and learned effective anger management techniques, particularly in her role as a mother to children ranging from teenagers to young adults. Financial management training further strengthened her sense of independence, teaching her the importance of saving and preparing for unexpected challenges.
“These lessons helped me rebuild my confidence,” Lakshmi said. “They gave stability not just to me, but to my entire family.”
Now empowered, Lakshmi has become a strong advocate for other women facing similar struggles. She encourages those who feel trapped or hopeless to reach out and seek support.
“If you’re thinking that your life has come to an end, please take that thought away,” she urged. “This program has really built me. If it can do that for me, it can do that for you as well.”
Lakshmi’s journey did not stop there. Between 2023 and 2025, she continued to build on her progress by participating in additional technical skills training programs offered by the Almanah Hope Centre, further strengthening her independence and sense of purpose.
Her story is one of courage, transformation, and hope and it’s a powerful reminder that with the right support, new beginnings are always possible.
